The ECOtec was an answer to a problem GM had of not having an answer to the up and coming â??import performanceâ?? market. GM Racing assembled a team to dive in head first and tear the motor apart and find out exactly what this new GM powerplant could handle. The newly assembled GM Racing ECOtec team had quite a daunting challenge on their hands but they were up to the task. However, once the team dissected the motor and what it was actually made of, they were pleasantly surprised with what laid in front of them - a stout and efficient powerplant with tons of potential.
The article gets crazy in-depth about the intricacies of the build and how the GM Racing Team solved each and every bump they hit along the journey to 800hp. That power goal is a far cry from the current ECOtec-powered drag monsters that pump out over 1,400hp, but 7 years ago the best and brightest 4G63â??s couldnâ??t even hit this number. The ECOtec was in its infancy back in 2002 and the GM Racing ECOtec Team made it possible for engines like the first forced-induced ECOtec, the 205hp Supercharged LSJ, to exist. With those building blocks in place, it allowed GM to develop the fantastic 260hp Turbocharged LNF ECOtec that powers the Cobalt SS, HHR SS, Pontiac Solstice GXP and Saturn Sky Redline that we all know and love today.
