    Rear Axle Modification

Wondering if anyone or any company has looked into modifying the rear axle? It seems to be just a piece of stamped, formed steel that could either modified or a new one made that would pivot similar to the old Ford pickup twin I-Beam front axle. That way the entire axle wouldn't hop when you hit a bump. Wouldn't be a true independant rear end but would probably ride and handle a lot better.
I'm no auto engineer, but when you look at all the suspension mod's that companies have out for the older cars and trucks, it looks like they could come up with something.
    Just food for thought--any opinions?

I havent seen any, although I have been tempted to climb under there with a grinder, and cut the chunk in the middle out, that would make it a true independant rear end, but at the same time, I think I would have to do a little modification of the pieces that would be left, in order to make it so the parts wouldnt fail on a bump or while cornering.

I believe the point is more of a swing arm like a bike or quad. You have to remember we own economy cars. They're not made to be the smoothest ride out there

I just threw this out as a "I wish they made this" thread. I remember years ago in an issue of Grassroots Motorsports Magazine a company was making some type of conversion rear axle, I think for the old Ford Escorts. Just got to thinking that with all the hundreds of thousands of Cobalts/Pontiac G5 and Cavalier/Sunfires there would probably be a good market for a better rear axle setup. Not something I'd want to fab up at home, but with all the suspension companies out there, it would seem dooable.

IMO there are about 682 other things that need fixed or modified long before they worry about the rear axle. I can't imagine any company putting the R and D into a rear axle mod that would sell very poorly most likey over the things we have now.

People are focused on the performance side, not the comfort. If comfort was a huge factor for people, we wouldn't be putting lowering springs and low profile tires on.
